The Society takes its name from J.R.R. Tolkien's Elvish name for Oxford, where he was both a student and later a Professor.

We normally meet in Lecture Room 2, Christ Church College at 8.00pm on Thursday and Friday evenings during Term, offering a wide choice of Tolkien-oriented, fantasy-focused and purely social events, such as:

  • Debates - both serious and plain silly, covering a variety of fantasy-related topics
  • Video evenings - watching Tolkien related movies, cartoons, parodies and documentaries.
  • Game meetings - everything from the indoor classics of LotR Risk and Tolkien Pictionary to outdoor activities like Golfimbol.
  • Speakers - once a term we invite academics to enlighten us about more serious sides of Tolkien's works.
  • Dramatic Reenactments - bringing Tolkien's (and not only his) works to life.
  • Punting - picnics, piracy, bridge-hopping and water croquet...
  • Miscelaneous parties and outings
  • And much more...

The highlight of our year is the Hilary Term Banquet - the grand society reunion, filled with dancing, singing and consuming great food, all this in costumes.

In addition to all this almost every summer since 1992, there has been a holiday trip organised by and mainly for members of Taruithorn. In Summer 1996 we arranged a spectacular 23 person holiday to North Wales. In 1997 we stayed in a castle in Pembrokeshire (south Wales). The 2004 and 2005 holidays were to the Lake District. And there have been discussions about going to Switzerland next year...

Membership of the society currently costs 8 pounds for a year.
