Professor Mikael Jern (AVS, Denmark and Linkoping University)

Mikael Jern is today Director of European Commission Affairs and "AVS Fellow" at Advanced Visual System (AVS). From 1969-79 he was a senior researcher and at the University of Lund in Sweden. Along with Professor Hertz he invented the first colour graphics system based on the ink jet plotter, which was subsequently sold to Applicon Inc. More than 1000 systems were sold worldwide. In 1980 Jern founded the Danish company UNIRAS to address the industry with a more general-purpose graphics approach. During 1990-93 he served as the leader of the UNIRAS research team in the USA, concentrating on GUI technology, customised visualisation widgets and advanced real-time interactive 3D technology. He has written over 100 papers in visual computing and visualisation applications areas and been invited speaker at many international conferences.
Since 1997, he has managed several large EC research projects in visualisation. He has recently been appointed as a Professor in Visualisation at Linkoping University, Sweden (LiTH/ITN).
