London Winter League Report (2006)

I made sure everyone got a good warmup by telling everyone to get off at the wrong tube station and so have to walk a few miles before we got to the park.

Curve were ready waiting for us, and took a few quick points while we were trying to get ourselves sorted out. We got into the game and took it back, to finish, um, a few points up. (Who remembers the score?)

So we had a game on the same pitch against Revolution, who'd picked up some old and wily Fire players to supplement their already tall and fast team. We couldn't keep up with them to start with, going down 6-2, although we managed to pull it to within two in the second half.

That loss put us in the 5-8 bracket, with a third consecutive game on the same pitch, this time against Sublime. They're young and fast, with a few decent handlers who like their IOs. Most of the game was trading points, but we took the lead around the middle, and took the half (IIRC), keeping our lead 'til the end. 9-7, I think.

Finally a break for an hour, then a game against some old Cambridge guys (their students were all at indoor regionals). With only 8 players, and an average age higher than I can count, they looked like a team that we could just run into the ground. Of course, being old, they all knew how to poach, and that made a bit of trouble for our deeps, but there was some great movement from the handlers and safeties. We won: by one, I think.
