Following the result of the strike ballot of October 8th, 2013, we have been informed the National UNISON has — in conjunction with other Higher Education Trades Unions — called a strike for Thursday 31st October, 2013.
University staff nationwide have been offered a pay rise of 1% this year, and have suffered a pay cut of 13% in real terms since October 2008. This squeeze on staff comes at a time when pay and benefits for University leaders increased on average by more than £5,000 in 2011-12. The average pay and pension packages for Vice-Chancellors hit almost £250,000, according to the annual Times Higher Education-Grant Thornton pay survey.
We hope members employed by the University will all be able to declare to their department supervisors and line managers their willingness to join in withdrawing their labour on Thursday 31st October. This will be an expression of solidarity not just with your local colleagues, but also with employees throughout the Universities in the UK.
