THE RARE BOOKS GROUP

ANNUAL STUDY CONFERENCE
on
TWENTIETH CENTURY BOOKS

PROGRAMME FACILITIES and VENUES BOOKING FORM

A RESIDENTIAL CONFERENCE ORGANIZED BY THE RARE BOOKS GROUP OF THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION

Pollock Halls, University of Edinburgh
Wednesday 10 September-Friday 12 September 1997

For its annual study conference in 1997 the Rare Books Group has chosen as its subject the twentieth-century book. The fast- approaching end of the century reminds us that many of these books are now far from "current"; many were rare when printed, and many others have become rare. The problems they pose for the rare books librarian may not be the same as those posed by earlier books, but they are still real problems. Our conference is designed to promote the curatorship of twentieth-century books by bringing together as speakers those with expertise in these fields and by providing an opportunity for all those who attend to exchange information, within and outside the formal sessions.

CONFERENCE FACILITIES and VENUES

The conference is based at the Pollock Halls, the University of Edinburghžs main halls of residence, about 10 minutes journey from the centre of the city and adjacent to Holyrood Park and Arthuržs Seat. All rooms have en-suite facilities.

Thursday's sessions take place at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art where the extended lunch period will enable delegates to view the Galleryžs collections as well as its summer exhibition, from the Keiller Collection, of surrealist art including artists' books.

The dinner on Thursday will be held in the Playfair Library, Old College, University of Edinburgh, a very fine classical interior built to the designs of W.H. Playfair in 1826-1827 as the Upper Library of the University Library. It continued in this function until 1967 when the collections moved to a new building.

Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop, Britainžs first open-access print studio, is a thriving organization which provides studio facilities at reasonable cost for any artist who wishes to work in etching, lithography, screenprinting or relief printing. There is also a Gallery (admission free) with a wide range of contemporary prints for sale.

At Napier University Library (Merchiston Campus) delegates will be able to view items from the Edward Clark Collection, which was assembled to demonstrate the development of typefaces and the history of typography, and has good holdings of private press books.
