Note: I've tried, as far as possible, to include only genuine philosophy departments, and to exclude departments such as one which described itself as "a teaching body of ministers which exists to build up the Kingdom of God through theological education", and which seemed to have nothing to do with philosophy at all (it now seems to have disappeared). I may not always have succeeded, and I'd be grateful if you'd let me know of any slips.

this was going to indicate Universities that had a "Homeland Security" page, with the "Current Threat Level", etc. I began by thinking that there were just a few, then that it was largely confined to Texas, but it's looking as though it's pretty widespread -- so this symbol is for all those "centres of learning" who perpetuate or even promote the tide of government-spawned paranoia and cowardice instead of standing against it.

American Philosophical Association  "the main professional organization for philosophers in the United States. Founded in 1900, its mission is to promote the exchange of ideas among philosophers, to encourage creative and scholarly activity in philosophy, to facilitate the professional work and teaching of philosophers, and to represent philosophy as a discipline." American Association of Philosophy Teachers Details of and information pertaining to the Association. (When I tried this [24 xii 04] the address was dead, but details of the Association can be found at the Learning and Teaching Support Network. American Philosophical Society The use of Javascript means that, without it, the site is difficult to use with a graphics-based browser with script turned off. Oddly, it's easy to use with a text-based browser (aside from the pointless message telling you that your bowser doesn't support Javascript).
