The University of Oxford
announces a new four-year DPhil (PhD) programme
commencing October 2007. The BBSRC has funded three
postgraduate studentships on this programme,
providing full funding (fees and stipend) for four years to UK students
or “fees only” to most other EU nationals (eligibility explained
on BBSRC website at
http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/funding/training/eligibility.pdf)
The four-year graduate programme will train students in research methods for
comparative genomics as applied to
the study of development and diversity in
animals, plants and protists, across the full spectrum of cell, tissue and
organismal levels of complexity. In contrast to many PhD programmes in the UK, students enrolling in this
new programme will initially follow a taught
practical component covering genomics, genetics and phylogenetics, plus
research methods in cell and developmental biology. Only then will students
choose a research project. All projects will be interdisciplinary, for
example including plant and animal-based research, or plant and microbial, or
animal and microbial.
Possible research supervisors for the
four-year DPhil programme in Genomes, Development
and Evolution include Peter Holland, Seb Shimeld, David Ferrier (Zoology), Jane Langdale, Miltos Tsiantis, Angela Hay (Plant Sciences), Keith Gull,
Michael Ginger and Helen Dawe (Dunn School of
Pathology). Prospective applicants do not choose supervisors or projects at
the stage of application or entrance; projects are selected midway through
the first year of the programme.
To apply please complete the
University application form (available as pdf from:

Evolution, admission via Zoology'. Section M (Personal Statement) should be
used to explain your motivation for pursuing this programme,
list any specific areas of interest within the field, and describe your
previous education and experience. Please submit
two copies of the application form, plus a CV and two references from
