2001 Regatta Report and Summary of Results
(Released 19th August 2001)

Oxford City Royal Regatta - Saturday 18th August 2001
1000m downstream on the Isis, from Folly Bridge, Oxford.

City of Oxford Rowing Club and Reading Rowing Club tied for the title of Victor Ludorum at the Oxford City Royal Regatta on Saturday, with 7 wins apiece, ousting Marlow Rowing Club who have held the title for the past 3 years. In third place was Tideway Scullers’ School with 6 wins. The Tideway club rarely ventures this far up the Thames, but was attracted this year by the range of events for Juniors included in the Regatta programme in response to the increasing popularity of junior rowing.

The City’s Junior squad beat Maidenhead to take the Junior 12 coxed quadruple sculls, and Harry Strong and Anna Smith won the men’s Junior 9 and women’s Junior 11 single sculls respectively. There were also wins for City of Oxford in the men’s novice fours, the veteran coxless fours, the women’s senior 2 coxless pairs, and veteran F sculls (Ernie Canning), and wins for Falcon Rowing Club in the senior 2 coxed fours and the women’s novice fours.

In the Invitation events, R.T. Harris & Son ‘A’ beat W.S. Atkins in the final of the Corporate Eights Challenge, Ben Herbert and Kurt Woodward won their categories of the Oxford Adaptive Rowing Single Sculls, and Kathryn Stewart, who learned to row as a junior at City of Oxford Rowing club and has just returned from taking part in the U23 World Junior Championships, was the overall winner of the women’s Indoor Rowing competition.

Overall some 250 crews took part in 58 events at the Regatta, which was organized by the City of Oxford Rowing Club and sponsored jointly by Tessella and Courier Newspaper Group. Prizes were awarded by the Lord Mayor of Oxford, Cllr Peter Moss.

Hundreds of people turned out to watch the races, which took place every three minutes between 9.00 am and 6.40 pm, and to take part in an indoor rowing competition open to all comers including non rowers.
