Philip Mountford is Professor of Organometallic Chemistry and Catalysis at Oxford. His group's research interests centre around the synthesis, structure, bonding and stoichiometric and catalytic reactivity of organometallic compounds of the early transition and lanthanide metals, and the alkaline earth metals. This research has a particular emphasis on compounds with metal-nitrogen multiple bonds (imido, hydrazido and related), homogeneous olefin polymerisation, and ring-opening polymerisation. He is an author of ca 260 articles and patents (H-index 49, ca. 8,400 citations, av. 32 citations per per-reviewed item), and has presented his group's research at ca 130 international and national conferences, meetings and university seminars. He was most recently awarded the 2015 Schlenk Lectureship sponsored by BASF and the University of Tübingen, Germany, and in 2014 was awarded a PKU-Eli Lilly prize lectureship by Beijing University. He received the Royal Society of Chemistry's Organometallic Chemistry (Frankland) Award for 2012-2013 and is also a former recipient of the RSC's Sir Edward Frankland Fellowship (1998-1999) for organometallic chemistry. He has held Visiting Professorships at the Universite Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, the University of Bordeaux, the University of Tübingen and the University of Heidelberg.

He has also contributed extensively to the general academic community within both the University sector and the Royal Society of Chemistry. From 2012 to 2015 he was Chairman of the Editorial Board of the RSC journal Dalton Transactions, one of the top three inorganic and organometallic chemistry journals world-wide. From 2008 to 2016 he was successively Executive Deputy/Acting Head and then Head of the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory at Oxford, a world-class grouping of ca. 20 independent inorganic academic faculty, and 150 PhD students postdoctoral researchers.  He has been a member of the Dalton Division (Inorganic Chemistry) Council of the RSC, and its awards committee. He has also acted as a consultant to DSM Elastomers BV, and has served as an external examiner for the undergraduate chemistry course at the University of East Anglia, UK. He is currently Chairman of the Editorial Board of the RSC book series Specialist Periodical Reviews.

A Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), Philip Mountford gained a D.Phil degree at the University of Oxford (1990) under the supervision of Professor M.L.H. Green FRS. He remained in Oxford as a Junior Research Fellow, and in 1992 moved directly to his first independent faculty position at the University of Nottingham where he established his research group. In 1998 he returned to Oxford where he is Professor of Organometallic Chemistry and Catalysis. In addition, he is a Fellow of St Edmund Hall, one of the oldest colleges in Oxford, and is responsible for delivering and overseeing all aspects of inorganic chemistry teaching to its undergraduates.

Philip Mountford lives in Oxford and is married with two daughters now at university. His interests and hobbies include the theatre, politics, art, music, football and travel. He sings with a local church choir and serves actively in its community, and he has also worked as a governor and then chair of governors at a local school in Oxford.
