Florida's modern history started with the arrival of Spanish adventurers in the 16th century. The native americans were slowly displaced by the Spanish and later British settlers and a large influx of African slaves.
It has had a turbulent history as influence moved between the different groups, but today it is most often thought of as the 'sunshine state' and popular holiday destination for both Americans and Europeans.
Florida is a large peninsula with its east coast exposed to the Atlantic ocean and its west coast facing the sheltered Gulf of Mexico.

Cypress Gardens | A more genteel place to visit, but it still has its own shows and amusements, pleasantly off-set by beautiful surroundings. |
Kennedy Space Centre | Not to be missed if you have any interest at all in science and space. Time it right and you may see a satellite launch. |
