An island in the North Atlantic between Europe and Greenland. It straddles an area of volcanic activity which gives rise to its unusual rock formations and active volcanoes and geysers.
The earliest vistors were Irish monks in the ninth century, but they were soon followed by permanent settlers from Norway.
