The Colloseum

It was built by Roman politicians, mainly emporers, basically to buy the poplular vote (seems buying votes is very old! ) It provided all sorts of barbaric amusments for public entertainments including the famous christian vs. lions, other wild and exotic animal matches including elephants, bears, and galdiators. Mock naval battles were staged which involved flooding the entire center of this giant facility and this was at time when only the rich had running water in their home, provided by the famous aquaducts. Consider that each of those arches is not a window but a door way a van can drive through and you get a feel for the scale of it.
