     born SCHUMACHER, a Jew, he made his fortune in

     South Africa before coming to Wytham House as           

     tenant during WWI and in 1920 buying Wytham estate

     from Lord Abingdon. Gave Wytham Woods and village

     to Oxford University in bequest. Daughter Hazel            

     c.1901-1939. Became naturalized citizens. He

     established Hill End centre for outdoor education of

     poor town children.
