Nan joined Chemistry Department of Lanzhou University as an undergraduate student, and then he obtained MPhil degree in coordination chemistry in the same department after 7-year study. He left for Hong Kong for PhD in chemistry department at the University of Hong Kong, working on the bismuth inhibitors for SARS helicase protein and human transferrin protein crystallography. In 2011, he moved to the United States and joined Medical School of Johns Hopkins University, working on cell biology and membrane protein expression (baculovirus and adenovirus systems), purification, characterization and reconstitution (nanodisc). He joined BGD group in Feb 2016, working on research projects related to biocatalysis.
