Lessons from VLE (SD Lee)
Bodington (Weblearn) is Oxford's centrally-supported VLE
- Matched needs of University (and happens to be open source)
- VLE team has 5 FTE
- expensive in other circumstances
- Direct costs to Oxford has been minimal – saving £150K per annun
- Taking advantage of open source development model and commitment to open standards
- Attracted funding from JISC etc to develop functionality, interoperability etc
- keeping pace with e-learning framework
Sustainable?
- Oxford committed to maintenance and standards-based, open source, modular approach suits Oxford and funding bodies
- Community building for Bodington (and Moodle) increasing
- looking at integrating best from Bodington, Moodle and interaction with portal frameworks
- VLE <> VRE <> VE?
