Bernwood Badge Event Finals Details

Sunday February 9th 1997

Directions:
The event is being held at Bernwood Forest, about 10 km East of Oxford, near the village of Stanton St John. The event will be signed from the villages of Oakley and Worminghall, and also from grid reference SP 602103.

Those travelling from the North and East should leave the M40 at junction 8, then head towards Oxford on the A40. Take the first exit (1km, signed A418 and Wheatley). Turn left off the exit slip-road and follow brown 'Waterperry Gardens' signs through Wheatley, passing under the A40 at SP 605057, then O-signs through Worminghall towards Oakley. The car park is off the Worminghall to Oakley road at SP 642109.

Those coming from all other directions should go round the Oxford Ring road, and take the A40 East towards the M40. Exit at 'Wheatley and Holton', cross south over the A40 signed Wheatley, then turn left at a mini-roundabout. Follow brown 'Waterperry Gardens' signs to the underpass at SP 605057, then signs to Worminghall and Oakley as above.

Parking:
The parking is on a disused airfield which should provide enough hard standing for all vehicles. On arrival please follow the marshals' directions. All parking is within 10 minutes' walk of the assembly area, also sited on the airfield.

Assembly:
This will be on the airfield, next to the route to the start and finish area. It will include:
Enquiries
Badge and Colour Coded EOD
Toilets
Ultrasport
Hot Food Vendor

Dogs:
We remind you that dogs are not allowed on Forestry Commission areas at organised events.

Start & Finish:
There is a 2.4 km walk to the start and finish area from assembly. (Sorry, someone put a motorway in the way.) Please allow 30 minutes. The start and finish are 50 metres apart, and are common to both badge and colour coded courses. There will be an unsupervised clothing dump between the two. Please provide your own plastic bag. At this point there will also be St John Ambulance and squash for finishers. There will be no toilets at the start: competitors are asked to use those at assembly, not the forest.

Start times range from 10.30 to 13.00, courses will close at 15.00. Call-up will be at -3 minutes. Late starters will be allowed to start at the discretion of the start officials, but times will not be adjusted. There will not be a stub collection.

At the finish keep in order after passing over the finish line, and hand in your control card to the finish officials. All competitors MUST report to the finish. Any competitors still out at 15.00 must retire and return to the finish as quickly as possible. There will be no on-the-day results.

Control Cards:
Tyvek control cards and descriptions should be enclosed with these final details. Please check that these are correct and phone 01235 221139 (20.00 - 23.00 or weekends please) in the event of any queries. There will be no descriptions displayed on the day, although they will be printed on the maps for badge courses. Control descriptions are available on the web.

Map:
Resurveyed by Duncan Archer in Autumn 1996, 1:15,000 with 5m contours. For badge courses the maps will be overprinted and bagged. Courses 14 to 16 will have written descriptions, all others will be pictorial descriptions. Colour-coded competitors will be using the master map system and will therefore need a pen and a map bag.

Courses:
All courses have negligible climb. Please do not go into the Out of bounds areas. Courses 1-3 have a manned control: punch your own card and show the back of your control card to the official. Courses 1-6 have two road crossings. Please follow tapes and cross at the marked point. The crossings are unmanned. The roads, while minor, carry some fast traffic: be careful.

Terrain:
Flat forested area with extensive path and ditch network. Varied runnability, much improved since recent forestry commission work in the area. This is a working forest and therefore parts of the forest may have changed since it was remapped. Any major changes will be displayed in the start boxes.

EOD:
Entry on the day for badge courses will be limited to the availability of overprinted maps. We cannot guarantee spaces on any course. Prices will be seniors £6.00, juniors / students / +65 £3.50.

Entry for colour coded courses will be on the day only. Entry fees for colour coded are: seniors £3.50 and juniors / students / +65 £2.00. The courses on offer are white, yellow, orange, light green and green. Registration will be open from 9.30. Start times will be from 10.30 to 13.00 and will be allocated at the start. Master maps for the white course will be available for copying in the start area, before the start itself.

Results:
We aim to post results on the web on Monday the 10th February. Paper copies will be in the post as soon as possible to those who have sent envelopes.

Safety:
Competitors are reminded that they compete at their own risk. All competitors should carry a whistle, and the organisers reserve the right to insist on the carrying of a cagoule or similar in the event of bad weather. This will be indicated on leaving the assembly area. Competitors travelling on their own who wish to be checked in and out of the forest should leave labelled keys at the finish.
