History
- TaeKwon-Do was founded on 11th April 1955 by General Choi Hong Hi (1918 - 2002).
- The ITF was founded on 22nd March 1966.
- The UKTA was founded in 1968 after TKD was formally introduced into the United Kingdom by Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha on 2nd July 1967
Terms of Respect
- The Instructor for Oxford University is Mr Andrew Tomkinson, Sabum Nim.
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd Dan instructors are classed as Bo Sabum Nim.
- 4th, 5th and 6th Dan International Instructors are classed as Sabum Nim.
- 7th Dan is Master, Sahyun Nim.
- 8th Dan is Senior Master, Sonim Sahyun Nim.
- 9th Dan is Grandmaster, Sasung Nim.
Technique
- An OBVERSE thecnique is performed using the arm on the same side as the leg which is most bent.
- A REVERESE technique is performed using the arm on the same side as the leg which is least bent.
- If the left leg is most bent, then it is a left stance. If the right leg is the most bent, then it is a right stance.
- Saju Jirugi and Saji Makgi are exercises, they are not patterns.
- The theory of power incorporates correct use of Reaction Force, Concentration, Equilibrium (both static and dynamic), Breath Control, Mass and Speed.
Miscellaneous
- The white belt signifies innocence, as that of a beginning student who has no previous knowledge of the art.
To pass the grading, you are required to perform the following as a MINIMUM requirement, as well as understanding the theory above:
- Parallel stance punch x 10
- Front rising kick x 10
- 10 Press ups
- Saju jirugi
- Saju makgi
- Forward walking stance punch
- Backward walking stance middle block
- Forward and backward walking stance middle block, reverse punch
*You will be give a Fine, Medium or Poor grade depending on your performance.
