Intellectual virtues in mathematics

Philosophers of mathematical practice have recently started to investigate intellectual virtues and vices and the effects they can have on mathematical practice. In this talk, I focus on the virtue of intellectual generosity. I argue that prominent mathematician William Thurston exemplified this virtue and that examining his generosity allows us to identify two problems with the reward structure of mathematics as well as how they might be overcome.
