The Germans dominated this race, moving steadily out over the first half of the race. At 1200 they were comfortably under-rating the other crews, and at 1400 a strong Swiss challenge for second place was matched by the Australians. At 200 to go the local yells of "Suisse up" gave the SUI double a boost, and they raised their rate to draw clear of AUS, with a photofinish for 4th and 5th taken by GBR ahead of ROM.
