Lithuania started well, but the Aussies followed suit, separated by a canvas at 400 metres with GBR half a length down and the French close behind. At 900 the Australians put in a big push, but the LTU held them off. At 1250 by the boats the GBR pair (current holders) attacked strongly, moving from fifth to second, but the Aussies responded at 1400 to snatch second place back. With 200 metres to go the Brits made another move in Redgrave and Pinsent's old boat, grabbing back second place, but the Lithuanians were a step ahead still. A photofinish for third and fourth place.

Germany II blasted off the start, opening up a significant gap, but at 400 m Italy pushed to match them, and then took the lead, rowing away from the rest of the pack, with everyone else shoving for the remainder of the places. New Zealand's final effort nearly took first, but the Italians held them off well.
