The Leander machine was well in action here. Led off the start by the Romanians, they powered through to take the lead by half a length at 500, moving out agaain at 750. The Romanians were strong all the way, pushing up to 1/3 length down at 900 but then dropping back by 1400. A late challenge by the French was held off by the Romanian four, while GBR upped to 40 to move nearly to clear water, giving them an emphatic victory.

At 250 m the Italians had their bowball in front of Australia, with Germany pushing catch for catch for the second place. This opened up further at 500 metres, although Spain tried to respond here. A sustained pace through the middle left it anyone's race between ITA/AUS/SLO/GER at 1850, with a thrilling finish giving it to the Italians by a whisker ahead of Slovenia.
