Ukraine led off the start, with Russia, Germany and the USA hotly in pursuit. The Ukraine held this lead until at 1250 the US crew, sporting new number one haircuts in honour of the occasion, put in a blistering burst to move ahead. Coming to 1800 it was three bow bobbles crossing the buoy lines together, the lead almost changing on the nod with Germany eventually snipping it by what the camera thought was 3 hundredths of a second from the Americans.

A decisive push by Norway just before the 500 mark was the key here, taking them clear of the field with the Dutch, French and Aussies initially vying for second. By the last 500 the Australians had gone slightly in front of the Dutch, the French hanging on grimly, and then Denmark heaved the rate up with much splashing in a nail-biting finish sprint. They didn't quite make it, but it was a heck of a sight.
