A clean start saw the Romanians blast off the blocks, anxious to emulate their women's eight. At 500 we saw the Germans demonstrate their strength with a dominating push which drove them out ahead by 1/3 length at 1200 metres. This classy finish continued, with a Canadian surge at 1400 taking them into second place. The Australian battled hard but couldn't quite take third from Romania.

At the first mark the Germans tried a push, taking them a short head in front of the Australians and Italians and French. Looking powerful but scrappy, the German Achte then moved on, clear by the boathouses to leave the French half a length up on the Italians, then the Australians. All four crews finished with rushed reverse ratio (very obviously a B-final) but none gave quarter, and they finished in that order.
