The Danish were off well, but the Germans even quicker. At 600 metres the Italians tried to drop the Russians, with DAN/GER still in contention for firt place. At 1500 the Danes pushed again and in the last 100 they were moving a seat a stroke to near clear water and a strong win.

By the first marker Canada, Netherlands and Spain had broken nicely clear of the rest of the pack, and Canada increased their advantage by the boating area, where Japan and New Zealand had come up to meet NED and ESP and started a challenge. Things were gripping for the last 250 metres, JPN, NED and NZL pressing hard for the third place. A desperate spurt by the Dutch resulted in a crab which cost them the race, a few metres from the line, while Japan surged ahead of the Kiwis to loud applause.
