The Olympic bid process is brewing hotter now, with the official bid proposals giving a massive amount of specific detail having to be in to the IOC yesterday. One question may have been answered by the choice of Dorney Lake as the London rowing venue (syndicated piece around the UK this morning). This could in theory change, but it is no surprise since the Eton venue will already have hosted the Worlds in 2006, although it may jeopardise the British bid through its distance from the main Olympic arenas.News yesterday that Julia Lindsey has replaced Dominic Reid as Event Manager for the Boat Race - more details on the official race website (UK).BUSA (UK) are having a big year, with the BUSA Head (February 29th) taking off properly, and a Birthday Bash on May 1st-3rd including alumni races at the BUSA Championships. It was a limited success because unfortunately, the weekend that it was rowed, Ops took us out in response to the news from Baghdad about Saddam's arrest. Never mind, Concept 2 gave me a hand with sponsorship of T Shirts for prizes and I was pleased with the outcome - entrance fees went to Breast cancer charities...."Monday 22nd December 2003

Letter from the Gulf version 2: Diane Godorov isn't the only umpire on duty in Iraq. Tim Walton (East Midlands, UK) is in Al Basrah. In a recent message he said: "As you will appreciate, there is little call for ML Umpires here though I have introduced all of the members of my Team to the Concept 2 and am still hopeful that we will be able to run the first Iraqi Concept Challenge - PTIs co-operating, before the end of the year. The annoying part about this is that Concept have fully backed the idea but without the blessing of the in theater PTIs I cannot push it ahead. Don't worry, I will continue pressing until I get a result." Perhaps an inter-unit erg challenge?!Thursday 18th December 2003
Letter from the Gulf. A Rowing Service contributor tells me that he's recently received a Christmas email from oarswoman Diane Godorov (USA). The rowing referee and US Army captain writes that she's "still alive and well and rowing in Iraq." Diane is mother to two teenagers and can be contacted via dianegodorov @ hotmail.com (remove spaces and paste into your email send line). From her missive: "A long overdue Happy December to one and all! I am proud to announce that I am the new owner of a beautiful Concept II rowing machine. I have to believe that it may be the only one of it's kind in country. Thanks for this incredible gift to Geoffery Knauth and friends, I am teaching the rabbi as well as the battalion commander and others the healthful benefits of rowing. It is especially nice to have the erg during the rainy/muddy/ mucky/yukky season when the silt/sand is now wet and like quicksand sucking you down. I have personally never liked the erg, it tells about your rowing performance, dear machine of torture, but I am fast to admit it makes for an awesome workout and an even greater conversation piece! AND, it turns out that one of the doctors with whom I do humanitarian medical care was on some US world team in 19XX! We rowers are everywhere, and that is a great thing!"For those in need of a holiday-season giggle, the Problem-Solving Flowchart - it's an 80kb Powerpoint presentation. The annual Henley Royal Regatta Stewards' Meeting was yesterday evening: no new stewards this year but some event changes. The Prince Philip (open 4+) is scrapped, and the Britannia splits into two. The Britannia Challenge Cup will be awarded to club 4+ (Thames-level, 16 crews) while the new Men's Student Fours will be awarded to university/college 4+ (Temple-level, 16 crews). There is also a rule change, banning current students from rowing in alumni crews entered in the Thames, Wyfold and Britannia (eg Tyrian rowing in the Thames would not be allowed to include any current UL students). Headline "the Aussies always get there first"? Perhaps not, but they are the first to formally announce one of their Athens crews. In a show of great confidence in the defending champions and FISA's Crew of the Year, Rowing Australia have confirmed that Drew Ginn and James Tomkins will be the national M2- in Athens next summer, while everyone else in the team has to go through selection trials, starting next week. Ginn and Tomkins are coached by Chris O'Brien, the head coach at Melbourne University BC. Wednesday 10th December 2003

Scam alert: I've received a large number of spam emails this weekend and morning, to various RS addresses, purporting to be from NatWest and encouraging me to log on to my account online via a link. In fact the code for the clickable link in the email disguises a fake web address, which leads to a scam site designed to mimic NatWest's. Similar recipients beware.... Best practice is not to click directly on or copy-paste any links embedded into emails - type in the address yourself into the browser toolbar. That would stop this one. But other scammers are more sophisticated, using similar-to web addresses which are still fakes. Remember that banks still use the post, and if they want you to do something with your account online, it's more likely they will write to you first. If unsure, ring the official helpline as listed in your paperwork, not any number given in a potentially scamming email. Results of Maidstone SBH (UK) now available.Launching (publicly) a new venture between Sir Steve Redgrave and the Rowing Service: Sportsbite (www.sportsbite.com). The racing jinx has hit Britain again - after an unusually dry summer and autumn sees regatta/head organisers rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of actual racing, suddenly Nasty Winds do their worst, affecting the one day of the week when most British clubs are in action. So far I know of the Scullers' Head being cancelled (and not necessarily to be rescheduled), and Christ Church Regatta in Oxford having to row the last day's racing as time-trials a la FISA. [Exeter's novice men and New College novice women won, if you were wondering.]The Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race has been won by Kevin Biggar and James Fitzgerald of Holiday Shoppe Challenge, a NZ team who boast 1997 race-winner Rob Hamill as their expert advisor and team leader. Which should make it no surprise that on Thursday Biggar and Fitzgerald went one better than their mentor, and broke his previous record for the crossing (41 days 2 hrs 55 minutes), registering their own time of 40 days 4 hrs and 53 minutes. Congratulations all.Friday 28th November 2003

We're looking for a four, stern coxed or coxless (preferably coxed I think, since we need a lookout for moving logs!) that could also be rigged as a quad. It needs to be pretty rugged (obviously) and able to be transported to Geita, near Lake Victoria, in Tanzania, probably by sea container on a truck. We may be able to organise transport from our end from Dar es Salaam or South Africa, or perhaps Perth in Australia. We also need both sets of oars and perhaps some spare gear. Maintenance will be a problem, but we are determined to boat up, push off, and take that awesome first stroke. Cost will be an issue, so nothing too fancy would be preferred. Anyone able to help us out in some way will be entitled to a row and a t-shirt. We will row at Nungwe Bay for those who are geographically inclined.
