Professor Simon Murch
Tuesday 8th September 2009: "Possible links between autoimmune diseases and unexplained intestinal problems"
Professor Simon Murch was a member of the Royal Free Hospital team caught up in the MMR controversy in 2002, when he and his colleagues discovered some links between autoimmunity and gut bacteria. They found evidence of impaired development of immune regulation in children with multiple food allerties, which overlapped with the population of children under their care with regressive autistic disorders. He has also worked on intestinal protein loss in patients with diseases such as Crohn's, and abnormalities in children with the malnutrition disorder kwashiorkor.
Professor Murch will explore the area of autoimmune problems and intestinal disorders. He is currently Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health at Warwick Medical School, and has just published his first novel, "Water Under The Bridge" (which is extremely good) - RQ.
