Dr. Henry Nicholls
8th May 2006: "Lonesome George - Conserving rare species"
In 1971 a giant tortoise somewhere between 60 and 200 years old was discovered on the Galapagan island of Pinta, which used to be a stopping point for sailors, pirates and seal hunters. He appears to be the final member of a species, and has been nicknamed 'Lonesome George'. Now efforts are being focused on finding a way for George to reproduce, so that his species may be resurrected.
Dr. Henry Nicholls is a scientist with a deep interest in the issues of conservation. He will use the story of Lonesome George to kick off a discussion of how we preserve endangered species such as those in the Galapagos.
