Tuesday 12th May 2009: "Biofilms"
Bacteria have long been regarded and studied as single, free-living organisms but more recently there has been a recognition that they frequently as complex, often mixed communities colonising surfaces known as biofilms.
Biofilms are present in medical, industrial and environmental settings. They are involved in many interactions with humans e.g. dental plaque, cleaning our waste water, corroding ship's hulls and in chronic infection. Recent advances in technology have made the study of these communities possible and our understanding of biofilms is rapidly expanding with the ultimate aim that we will be able to control and utilise them.
Drs Packer and Gould work on biofilms at Oxford Brookes University.
Come along and join us at 7pm in Blackwells Main Bookshop, Broad Street, Oxford.
