Examples of the permitted and prohibited substances (based upon theInternational Olympic Committee Medical Code 1994).
- Asthma
- Allowed - salbutamol inhaler, terbutaline inhaler
- Banned - products containing sympathomimetics (eg ephedrine, fenoterol, isoprenaline)
- Cough
- Allowed - all antibiotics, steam and menthol inhalers, cough mixtures containing antihistamines, pholcodine, guaiphenesin, dextromethorphan
- Banned - products containing sympathomimetics (eg ephedrine, phenylpropanolamine)
- Diarrhoea
- Allowed - diphenoxylate, loperamide, products containing electrolytes (eg Dioralyte, Rehidrat)
- Banned - products containing opiods (eg, morphine)
- Hay Fever
- Allowed - antihistamines, nasal sprays containing a corticosteroid or xylometazoline, eyedrops containing sodium cromoglycate
- Banned - products containing ephedrine, psuedoephedrine [ I assume this is a misspelling of psEUdoephedrine - AD ]
- Pain
- Allowed - aspirin, codeine, dihydrocodeine, ibuprofen, paracetamol, all non-steroid anti-inflammatories
- Banned - products containing opiods (eg dextropropoxyphene) or caffeine
- Vomiting
- Allowed - domperidone, metoclopramide
