London, Ontario, July 26th 1998:

The Canadian National Rowing Team's Senior B crews at the Nation's Cup in Ioannina, Greece, competed in both grand and B finals held today of this regatta for rowers below the age of 23.

The women's lightweight double of Leigh Ann Niven of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Nola Zwarich of Calgary, Alta, placed fourth behind Australia, Italy and Switzerland. Their time of 7:25.3 was five seconds behind the medallists. Also in a grand final race today, the women's heavyweight four boat of Jacqui Cook, Roslyn McLeod, Rachel Dunnet and Katy Dunnet placed sixth. The Australian crew dominated the race and won by two boat lengths (no times available).

The men's lightweight double of David Coode and Andrew Borden were fourth place in the semi-final, qualifying for the B final race. They finished second in the B final in 6:38.5 - 1.7 seconds behind the local Greek crew. The men's eight won the B final with Spain coming in second and Italy in third. The crew fought off a strong challenge in the last 100 metres to lead by only 0.4 of a second at the finish line. The Canadian men's eight crew at the Nation's Cup consisted of Matt Swick, Bryden McDonald, Ryan Neufeld, Barney Williams, Joe Stankovicins, Kevin White, Paul Hawksworth, Morgan Crookes and Geoff Adamson - cox. Their time was 6:08 in a strong headwind.
