These notes outline the system of progression through the events.

CASE1 - 7/8 entries Two preliminary heats, one repechage heat. Winner of each preliminary goes to the A final, remainder to the repechage. The first four crews in the repechage go to the A final, the remainder to the B final.

CASE 2 - 9-12 entries Two preliminary heats, two repechage heats. Winner of each preliminary goes to the A final, remainder go to the repechage. The first two crews in each repechage go to the A final, the remainder to the B final.

CASE 3 - 13-15 entries Three preliminary heats, one repechage heat. The first three crews of each preliminary go to the semi-finals, the remainder to the repechage. The first three crews in the repechage go to the semi-finals, the remainder go to the C final. The first three crews of each semi-final go to the A final, the rest to the B final.

CASE4 - 16-18 entries Three preliminary heats and three repechage heats. The winner of each preliminary heat goes to the semi-finals, the remainder to the repechage. The first three crews of each repechage go to the semi-finals, the remainder to the C final. The first three crews of each semi-final go to the A final, the remainder go to the B final.

CASE 5 - 19-24 entries Four preliminary heats and four repechage heats. The winner of each preliminary heat goes to the semi-finals, the remainder to the repechage. The first two crews of each repechage go to the semi-finals, the remainder go to the semi-finals C/D. The first three crews of each semi-final go forward to the A final, the remainder go to the B final. The first three crews of each semi-final C&D go to the C final, the remainder to the D final. (For 19 entries the last crew in each semi-final C&D goes to the D final, and the C final will have only 5 crews).

CASE 6 - 25-36 entries Six preliminary heats and six repechage heats. The winner of each preliminary goes to the semi-finals, the remainder go to the repechage. The winner of each repechage heat goes to the semi-finals, the second and third of each repechage heat go to the semifinals C&D; the remainder are eliminated. The first three crews of each semi-final go to the A final, the remainder go to the B final. The first three crews of each semi-final C&D go to the C final, the remainder go to the D final.
