The Iron Industry of the Weald By Henry Cleere and David Crossley

Edited by Jeremy Hodgkinson

Merton Priory Press have announced the publication of a revised and extended second edition of this important book, which first appeared in 1985 and was immediately acclaimed as the definitive regional study of the charcoal iron industry as well as a major addition to writing on Wealden history generally.

The new edition reprints the whole of the original text (and all the illustrations), covering the geology of the Weald (by Bernard Worssam); prehistoric, Roman and medieval ironmaking; the rise and fall of the charcoal blast furnace in the Weald; and the archaeology and technology of the industry during the blast furnace period. The extensive gazetteers of sites which are an essential feature of the book have been revised and extended in the light of recent fieldwork and research, as has the bibliography.

There is also a completely new index, compiled by Ann Hudson, which now includes the gazetteers as well as the main text.

The new edition is a fully bound hardback, with an illustrated dust- jacket. The text is 20 pages longer than the first edition and is printed on better paper. Above all, at 24.95 pounds UK, the book is half the price of the 1985 edition and is available direct from the publisher,
