Question 7: An illustration of how the web can be used to create a reading experience that would not be possible in an ordinary book.

The Hypertext Novel Experience

Welcome to 'The Hypertext Novel Experience'!

This site is designed to introduce the hypertext novel, and the implications the form has, to the reader of conventional novels. The example used is a hypertext version of the first chapter of Zadie Smith's White Teeth.

After you've explored the hypertext version, you'll be asked to consider the differences in the reading experience between the hypertext version and the book. This will lead to a discussion of the hypertext form, the effect hypertext has on the reader, and finally the influence that the hypertext novel must have on literary theory.

What is a hypertext novel?
