Web-based remote visualization using AVS/Express.

Matt Cooper, Manchester Visualization Centre.

Under a number of projects at the Manchester Visualization Centre we have made use of the visualization functions of AVS/Express to produce applications which are accessed from a remote client (typically a web browser). Currently we are involved with the large EU-funded project, NOVICE, which is bringing such web-based technology to the clinical environment. The browser is used to select data and carry out a range of image processing and visualization functions culminating in rendering of images and animations which can be viewed on the local host. This permits the use of a high-performance data and compute server, located at MVC, from a range of sites, both in Manchester and across Europe, via even slow networking facilities such as dialup access.

The clinician is able to make use of sophisticated visualization techniques on the large data sets which are becoming commonplace in modern diagnostic work with only a simple, low-specification computer system on their desk and requiring no special software for the task.
