HENRY HARDY is known, if known at all, as the editor of the work of Isaiah Berlin. Not many people know he has also been a musician of sorts. He had a burst of composing activity between the ages of 16 and 24, but the muse has now deserted him. His composition was his equivalent of writing teenage poetry, at least to start with. His school didn’t encourage him in his weird behaviour, which may help to explain why it fizzled out. Another reason is that he didn’t want to write pieces that weren’t performed, and at the time of writing some of his pieces still haven’t been. But here they are (except for a lost organ voluntary, op. 4), within one set of covers, for connoisseurs of peculiar publications.

A distinguished musicologist who heard the ‘Anthem for St Frideswide’ on the Sibelius website wrote to the composer: ‘Wow, the anthem is really something!!! It took a little getting used to how Sibelius sounds ... but I think the piece could really make an effect in performance very word-sensitive (no surprise, given your later activities), and with a freshness to the harmonic progressions. Bravo!’
