An online version was prepared from files rescued from floppy discs
formatted for the BBC B Computer on which the thesis was typed.
I have checked the results against a printed copy of the original and apart
from a few pages in the appendices this contains all the text.
It has not been possible to preserve pagination but I thought it best to make the
thesis available, as it is, in simple html.
