Teaching

I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for linguistics with students in the different contexts of tutorials, classes and lectures, and find it truly rewarding to see students develop as independent learners and follow their own interests. I have taught various different courses at undergraduate level, mainly on syntax or on Portuguese linguistics.

Since 2016 I have been an occasional tutor for the undergraduate papers History and Structure of the Portuguese Language (Portuguese IV) and Varieties of Portuguese (Portuguese V), giving classes on phonetic and phonemic transcription, and giving tutorials for revision and feedback on mock exams. I gave a number of tutorials and lectures for these courses in 2021-22 as sabbatical cover.

In Michaelmas 2019 I delivered the FHS syntax lecture course, a series of eight lectures on advanced topics in syntax, with a focus on Lexical-Functional Grammar.

In 2018-19 I was a tutor for the Preliminary (first year undergraduate) paper in Grammatical Analysis, teaching a fortnightly intercollegiate class of five students.

To develop my teaching skills and gain formal recognition of my teaching activities, in 2018-19 I completed the Developing Learning and Teaching award, which is accredited by SEDA. This qualification was awarded after attending a series of seminars and submitting a teaching portfolio, including information on my teaching philosophy and practice.

From 2016 to 2021 I was a Graduate Mentor for Merton College, supporting students of Modern Languages (including French, Spanish, and Portuguese) and/or Linguistics with advice on essay-writing, managing their workload, revision, examination technique, and other academic matters. I also taught a term of Portuguese translation to first-year undergraduates (2018). I always enjoy the chance to spend time discussing translation and literature with students, and find that linguistics provides me with new ways of looking at these areas.
