Reasons for learning German: no. 158 in an occasional series

The reinstatement of Berlin as the capital has revived interest in an idiosyncratic, cosmopolitan city with an immense range of cultural offerings, from the clubs of Mitte to the Berlin Philharmonic. All of a sudden, it is a cool place to be if you are young, just as it was in the days when Christopher Isherwood lived there in the 30s. What is more, with eastern Europe opening up, there is a good argument for saying that German has become a more useful language to learn than Spanish or French.
