Reasons for learning German: no. 159 in an occasional series

Language graduates have one of the lowest unemployment rates - 4.2% for German, 4.3% for French - of any subject. It is lower than computing, 6%, business administration, 6.3%, and media studies, 7.5% (source: HESA 1999, table 2f). London First, the organisation responsible for attracting inward investment to the capital, has argued that it is because employers can find multilingual skills in London that they will relocate there. The importance of being able to communicate in a foreign language, and understand foreign cultures, far from being dismissed by employers, is highly prized.
