Reasons for learning German: no. 161 in an occasional series

After the match, it had been a pleasure to hear the coach of England [Kevin Keegan] answer questions from a group of German journalists in their own language. This was a rare respite from the state-sponsored isolation to which we have been condemned by the insularity of our attitudes and the inadequacies of our education system, exemplified by the fact that out of the 16 referees controlling the matches at Euro 2000, only two - both of the British representatives - are monolinguists. (Richard Williams in the Guardian, 20 June 2000, 'Sport Extra', p. 2.)
