Dr Kalypso Nicolaïdis is University Lecturer in International Relations at Oxford University, and a Fellow at St Antony's College. She teaches in European integration, international relations, international political economy and game theory.In the academic year 2004-2005, she was Vincent Wright Chair at Sciences-Po, Paris (2004-2005). Previously she was Associate Professor at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and taught at the Ecole Nationale d'Administration in Paris. At Harvard she was the founder and chair of the Kokkalis Programme on Southeast Europe. At Oxford University she is now Chair of the South East European Studies at Oxford (SEESOX) which runs, inter alia, the Greek-Turkish Network.
Professor Nicolaïdis has been advising George Papandreou on European affairs since 1996. In 1996-1997 she worked with Mr Papandreou on the Amsterdam Treaty and coordinated inputs from colleagues at Harvard University. In 2002 and 2003, she chaired the International Group of Expert Advisors to George Papandreou (IGE) on the Convention for the Future of Europe and the Greek Presidency (the group comprised Professors Stanley Hoffmann, Paul Magnette, Anand Menon, Helen Wallace, Joseph Weiler, Haris Pamboukis, Nikos Kotzias andd Jean Nestor). She is also part of a group of experts to promote the yes campaign for the Constitution of the French socialist party. Nicolaïdis has also worked in the past with the European Commission on the White Paper on Governance (subsidiarity, global governance) and other international organizations including UNCTAD and the OECD.
Most recently she was advisor to the Nexus Institute and the Dutch presidency of the EU on the theme of "Europe: a Beautiful Idea" culminating in the December 2004 intellectual summit. She has been awarded the Chair in European citizenship at the Bruges College for 2005-2006, set up by the Dutch government as a follow-up to their presidency initiative (following Bronislav Geremek, first holder).
She has published widely on the constitutional debate, EU relations with Turkey and EuroMed, issues of identity, justice and cooperation in the international system, the sources of legitimacy in European and global governance, as well as preventive diplomacy and dispute resolution. She has published on the EU as well as other issues in international affairs in numerous journals including Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The Journal of Common Market Studies, Journal of European Public Policy and International Organization. Her latest publications include: Whose Europe? National Models and the Constitution of the European Union (Oxford University Press, 2003) and The Federal Vision: Legitimacy and Levels of Governance in the US and the EU (Oxford University Press, 2001).
Nicolaïdis holds a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University, a Master in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, a Master in International Economics and a Diplome from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris. She is of French and Greek nationality. Her husband, Simon Saunders is British and teaches Philosophy of Science at Oxford University. Her two children, Ari and Daphne, are trans-channel Europeans.
