2001 Regatta Preview
(Released 06/08/01)
Preparations
are in full swing for the Oxford City Royal Regatta on Saturday 18th
August. The Regatta, which is organized by City
of Oxford Rowing Club and sponsored this year by Tessella
and Courier newspaper group, is one of the oldest in the country,
with the Regatta
Trophies dating back to 1841.
Over
250 crews from rowing clubs all over the country (including local
rowing clubs and colleges), as well as from abroad, are expected to
take part. About 600 people, ranging in age from 10 to 70 years,
will compete in about 50 events, many sponsored
by local companies.
The
course is 1000 m on the Isis,
starting just below Folly Bridge next to Christ Church Meadows, and
finishing at Longbridges (near Hinksey Weir). Races will be held at
2-3 minute intervals throughout the day without a break, starting at
9.00 am and finishing at about 7.00 pm.
The
highlights of the day will include:
