Oxford City Royal Regatta - Saturday 17^th August 2002

”City and University Crews to Race
at Oxford City’s Annual Regatta”
Released 13th August 2002

City and University crews are set to battle it out at the City’s annual regatta on Saturday.

The Oxford City Royal Regatta is one of the oldest in the country, dating back to 1841. This year some 240 crews (about 600 competitors in total), including 48 crews from the city and 23 crews from the university, will compete in a total of 60 events. Racing will take place over a 1 km course on the River Thames between Folly Bridge and Long Bridges (near Donnington Bridge). In all, 192 races have been scheduled to run at 2.8 minute intervals throughout the day without a break, starting at 9.00 am and finishing at 6.00 pm.

The highlights include Invitation Corporate Eights races (sponsored by Hewden Hire Centres, Oxford Instruments and Oxford University Press), Invitation Adaptive Sculling races (for disabled rowers), races for Juniors (many of whom attend local schools and have learned to row at City of Oxford Rowing Club), and a sprint indoor rowing competition open to all comers. A Victor Ludorum Trophy will be presented to the club that wins the most open events on the day.

The Lord Mayor will attend the Regatta and present prizes at the Finish at Long Bridges between 3.45 pm and 5.30 pm. She will arrive by launch, which will convey her down the course from Folly Bridge at about 3.30 pm.

The Regatta is free to spectators from the towpath. Refreshments will be available throughout the day from the marquee next the Finish at Long Bridges, and from the bar at the City of Oxford Rowing Club on Meadow Lane.
