Yorkshire DalesSummer 1999The Yorkshire Dales are located north of Oxford about 4 hrs drive in the center of the country. This is the real life home of James Herriot, the farm vet from All Creatures Great and Small. He was from a small town called Thirsk. His home was turned into a museum and it looks just like it did on the TV program. Part of it is also a veterinary museum. and some of the tools they used look dreadful. The dales are very rural, spotted with rustic stone buildings, creating some of the most beautiful countryside in England. Sheep dot the landscape as they are still a large part of the local economy. If you look closely at this photo you can see the dry stone walls that characterize the quilt-like landscape. The authors of Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre and many other books was born near the dales in Haworth. They spent many hours playing on the moors.
