The laboratory works on smart manufacturing, particularly battery manufacturing, through the NEXTRODE research programme. The aim is to reduce manufacturing-line commissioning times, improve operational efficiency and achieve more consistent product quality.

Research questions

Many manufacturing processes operate at high throughput while important material properties cannot be measured directly. We study how sensing, estimation and physical modelling can expose those hidden properties, and how feedback and optimisation can use that information in real time.

Methods and applications

Our current work develops modelling and control methods for slot-die battery-electrode coating, including cross-directional film-thickness regulation. Although motivated by battery manufacturing, the resulting methods apply more broadly to continuous and high-throughput manufacturing systems.
