L63 Licensing and the Internet

This page primarily concerns sources of technology

The variety of web pages and their rate of change at present is such that the only a few starting points will be given here. There is no doubt though that the internet is an extremely powerful tool in carrying out searches for national or international licensing opportunities.

In searching for technology to license in or advertise to license out, most of the sources mentioned previously (L35) will have web pages. Other key starting points are :

The US Association of University Technology Managers : http://www.autm.net/
This has a very large international collection of technology transfer office (TTO) details listed under "Technology Offices". AURIL (http://www.auril.org.uk/
) the UK equivalent of AUTM is another possible sarting point.

University Web sites in most cases now have technology transfer office (TTO) / technology licensing (TLO) pages (eg Oxford's Isis Innovation). In the US government departments with large R&D budgets also have TTO pages.

Increasingly particular technical fields are developing industry based web sites which collect information and web links relating to a particular industry. Sometimes they are part of or linked to Industry Associations but these too provide a good starting point.

Patent Searching Databases
Patent database searching is another route to finding technology and some sites are beginning to identify which patents are available for licensing if the patentee will pay a fee to identify the patent as such. Many such databases exist but for European Data use Espace@net. For US patents there are several possible sources among them http://www.delphion.com/ and the USPTO website.

Commercial Technology Offices
Recently a number of internet based companies offering patent based technology exchanges or auction systems have been formed. How successful these will be in the long term remains to be seen (the number of such sites changes each year). http://yet2.com is one representative US example. Others include : http://www.2xfr.com/ http://www.oceantomo.com http://www.licentec.com/ (NB No recommendation or endorsement is implied by listing here).
