OUSFG Michaelmas Termcard 2004

Every Sunday of term (except 1st week (10 Oct) and 8th week (28 Nov)): Library Meetings are now 8:30 - 11.30pm in Laura's room, the Weston Buildings, House 2, Room 3. This nice map from Laura should get you to the Weston Buildings (just along the road from Sebastian's room in Holywell Manor, where we had the fresher's drinks and 2nd Week meeting). Go past the lodge and down the first set of steps, then along to the house with 2 on the door. Laura's buzzer is the 3rd from the bottom.

Wednesday discussion meetings (except 3rd week, see below), speaker meeting, and silly games (see below for topics) are held at 8pm in Jesus College in Seminar Room A. From the entrance to Jesus, go straight across first quad, through an archway into second quad and turn right. Go through another archway and turn left. Staircase XVIII is the modern block straight ahead. Go up the steps and through the door.

Wednesday video meetings (see below for programme) usually start at 8pm in in St John's College (on St Giles; see map) JCR video room.

Termcard
10 Oct  Sunday 1st Week Freshers' Drinks 4-6pm in the bar of Holywell Manor (just below the library). It would probably be a bad idea to include a link to descriptions of previous Freshers' Drinks on the Wiki.
13 Oct  Wednesday 1st Week Discussion SF Books to films: Examples of good and bad ones, why they are good/bad, and how adaptations should be handled to produce a good one. The term's video meetings will also be linked to this meeting, showing some examples of good films based on books.
20 Oct  Wednesday 2nd Week Video A Clockwork Orange.
27 Oct  Wednesday 3rd Week Discussion Story Synthesis led by Nick Clarke - in St Hilda's Lady Brodie Room.
The room is in the Hall Building, which is the first one you see directly opposite you as you go through the gates, and it's signposted as soon as you go into hall. There'll be someone waiting at the entrance before the meeting to wave people in the general direction.
Working within the constraints of a few required plot elements can we come up with ideas and plot for a book or film? Previous stories have involved teleporting Swiss plane crash victims (or are they?) biotech (somehow involving the Great God Cthulhu and a naked cloned murderer played by SM Gellar), alien contact (superintelligent bears rescue space station survivors), time travel, and cloning.
3 Nov  Wednesday 4th Week Video Millennium (that's the time travel film based on a John Varley novel, not the X-Files clone).
Unfortunately The Handmaid's Tale turned out to be difficult to obtain, but Millennium should prove a fine replacement.
10 Nov  Wednesday 5th Week Discussion OUSFG Awards Discussion.
13 Nov  Saturday 5th Week Bonus Videos Dune (the TV series): afternoon/evening at Angharad's house.
17 Nov  Wednesday 6th Week Video Forbidden Planet
24 Nov  Wednesday 7th Week Speaker Meeting Juliet E McKenna in Jesus College, Seminar Room A (as for discussion meetings). "That was then and this is now - Thoughts on five years as a professional SF&F writer."
27 Nov  Saturday 7th Week Christmas Party New Music Room, Corpus Christi. Contact Mike Froggatt by Wednesday.
1 Dec  Wednesday 8th Week Silly Games in Jesus College, Seminar Room A (as for discussion meetings).

There will also be a Christmas Party and two bonus video meetings: Dune (the TV series) and Babylon 5 (3rd and 4th seasons, with introduction for newcomers).
