OUSFG Hilary Termcard 2022

We hold meetings every Sunday at 8pm (from 4th to 7th Week) in St Cross College. We'll gather in the Porter's Lodge at 8pm before making our way to the meeting room.

For some meetings, we will attempt to open a Zoom connection to help the geographically or epidemiologically disadvantaged to participate.

See below for details, and sign up for the ousfg-announce mailing list to receive a reminder and details for each meeting, including the Zoom connection details.

Also remember that Sunday is the first day of the Oxford Week, so please check the dates below if you are unsure.

Termcard
16 Jan  Sunday 1st Week Geek Retreat Plans + Werewolf We will start by discussing our plans for the coming term, followed by a game or two of Werewolf. Werewolf is a party game about finding a murderous traitor among our number – and perfectly themed for Hallowe'en! We have our own version of the rules, carefully honed over many years.
23 Jan  Sunday 2nd Week Geek Retreat Discussion Adapting Science Fiction and Fantasy Across Media. Is the book always better than the film? If so, why? Join us to discuss how science fiction and fantasy work differently across film, television, books, comics, games, and more, even when they're telling the same story. (Tim)
30 Jan  Sunday 3rd Week Thirsty Meeples Games Board games evening from 7–10pm at Thirsty Meeples Cafe (97–98 Gloucester Green, OX1 2DF). Please note that the cafe has a £6–7.50 cover charge.
6 Feb  Sunday 4th Week St Cross Discussion Obscure mythical creatures (William). Everyone knows dragons and unicorns, but what are some lesser known myths and cryptids? Bring along some cool facts about your favourite bizarre monster or a local legend from where you live as we discuss obscure mythical creatures!
13 Feb  Sunday 5th Week St Cross Discussion Philosophy and Science Fiction. Science Fiction is full of philosophical ideas – think The Matrix, Blade Runner, and more. Join Kiran, OUSFG's resident philosopher, for a discussion of SF and philosophy.
17 Feb  Thursday 5th Week Zoom Quiz OUSFG will be taking part in the Oxford Geek Quiz. Please join us and help us compete for the crown of 'the one wot won that year'! This event will use a different Zoom address and probably require registration. Details to be announced, or you can check the WhoSoc termcard.
20 Feb  Sunday 6th Week St Cross Discussion Collaborative storytelling discussion, Tentacular Vikings takes a theme and runs with it as we all work together to write a story. Last term's epic was Boom Sticks, and previous stories have involved humanity's role in a proxy war between planetary gods, the St Giles' Fair's role in keeping freshers from disappearing into parallel dimensions, and finally an explanation for why we keep crashing on that dratted desert planet. Oh yes, and tentacular Vikings.
27 Feb  Sunday 7th Week St Cross Discussion Speculation and prediction, what SF predicts for the future and how well it has done in the past (Lili)
6 Mar  Sunday 8th Week OUSFG Library AGM + Werewolf Annual General Meeting, at which we elect next term's committee and subject the ConstitutionBylaws to not at all frivilous amendements; and peruse the arcane contents of the OUSFG library. This will be followed by a game or two of Werewolf.

The first couple of meetings of term were held upstairs in Geek Retreat (27 New Inn Hall St, OX1 2DH). Unfortunately Geek Retreat closed on 28th January 2022, but we found a lovely new home at St Cross College.
