Most of our meetings are on Sundays at 8pm in Balliol College. We will meet at the Balliol Porter's Lodge before making our way to the meeting room (usually the Massey Room).
See below for details, and sign up for the ousfg-announce mailing list to receive a reminder and details for each meeting.
Please remember that Sunday is the first day of the Oxford Week, so do check the dates below if you are unsure.
21 Apr | Sunday | 1st Week | Balliol | Discussion | Disability in SFF. We will talk about portrayal of disability in science fiction/fantasy (SFF) narratives! What are the ways disabilities are portrayed in SFF (which often features very powerful protagonists), and are these portrayals good? Reaching out beyond realism, we can e.g. see characters with power their disability (Professor X), characters whose disabilities are somehow tied-into their abilities (Percy Jackson and the Olympians), or even a new ways we can think of what disability is (are non-magical users in a magical world disabled?) |
28 Apr | Sunday | 2nd Week | Balliol | Speaker | A.Y. Chao. We are hosting a Q&A with the New York Times Bestselling author of Shanghai Immortal. More details on eventbrite (registration is optional). |
5 May | Sunday | 3rd Week | Trinity | Discussion |
Collaborative storytelling discussion, Tentacular Vikings
takes a theme and runs with it as we all work together to write (or at least plan) a story.
Last term revealed no return from entering a mysterious gate in a submerged Oxford.
Some previous stories have involved a proxy war between planetary gods,
the use of a time machine to establish academic priority,
Boom Sticks,
and finally an explanation for why we keep crashing on that dratted desert planet.
Oh yes, and tentacular Vikings. Exceptionally, this meeting will be held in Trinity College (Teaching Room 5) |
12 May | Sunday 4pm | 4th Week | Library | We are taking a walk to explore the OUSFG library containing over 800 books!
(which you can also see here). We will meet at 4 pm at Martyrs' Memorial (the column in front of Magdalen Street's Tesco) and start to walk to the Library together (about a mile north / 25 min walk) at 4:05 pm. If you miss us, please contact Paulina on Discord. |

19 May | Sunday | 5th Week | Balliol | Discussion | Let's talk about your favourite vampire stories, the evolution, perks and pitfalls of them, and all things fangs |
23 May | Thursday | 5th Week | Quiz | OUSFG will be taking part in the Oxford Geek Quiz. Please join us and help us compete for the crown of 'the one wot won that year'! Details TBA, perhaps on the WhoSoc termcard. | |
2 Jun | Sunday | 7th Week | Balliol | Discussion | What makes a good short story? Come prepared to discuss a favorite short story or two. Does a good spec fic story differ from other good stories? Is a good concept enough? What other magic ingredients do editors and readers look for? |
9 Jun | Sunday | 8th Week | Balliol | Games | As a relaxing end to the term, we will be playing party games — only spoil it and increase the stress and paranoia by playing Werewolf. |
16 Jun | Sunday | 9th Week | river | Party | For anyone still around, or recovering from exams, we plan a punt party (date, time, and location TBC). |
