Most of our meetings are on Sundays at 8pm in St. Anne's College, Seminar Room 11. Follow the map to get to the building. We'll be meeting outside the library entrance at 8pm. If you're late, please message on Discord to be let into the building. There is an elevator for accessibility, though it is very slow – apologies for that!
See below for details, sign up for the ousfg-announce mailing list to receive a reminder and details for each meeting, or check on Discord for smaller updates.
Please remember that Sunday is the first day of the Oxford Week, so do check the dates below if you are unsure.
| 26 Apr | Sunday | 1st Week | St. Anne's | Discussion | Ethics (Paulina). Join for our irregularly scheduled SFF & Philosophy discussion. This time we are going to talk about stories that focus on ethical dilemmas, real or supernatural. We talk about how fantasy and sci-fi approach these questions (and are approaches different by the genre?) and discuss examples! |
| 3 May | Sunday 13:00 | 2nd Week | DoCS Lecture Theatre | Speaker | Christy Theodoulou, ex-Law student, is coming to talk about her debut book, Godless Cosmologies. Join us to learn more about this exciting new gothic fantasy, and the experiences of a new and young author writing and publishing in today's landscape. This event is at 13:00 in the Department of Computer Science, Bill Roscoe Lecture Theatre. |
| 3 May | Sunday 20:00 | 2nd Week | St. Anne's | Game | Werewolf Night. Time to dust off your crossbows and break out your poker faces… this Wednesday OUSFG will be playing Werewolf! If you aren't already familiar with it, Werewolf is a silly and fiendish role-playing game similar to Mafia. A group of villagers are trying to track down some werewolves hiding in their midst; this involves logical deduction, shameless lying and backstabbing, and a lot of silliness. We'll explain the rules on the night or, if you're very keen, you can see them here. |
| 10 May | Sunday | 3rd Week | St. Anne's | TV | Murder Bot Screening. This week we will be watching the Murderbot TV series! This is based on the book All Systems Red, the first in The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells. We follow the construct Murderbot who, after hacking it's governer module, would much rather binge soap operas all day instead of go on a murderous rampage like everyone expects. Sent on a dangerous mission by its corporate owners, it struggles to protect its clients while hiding its autonomy. |
| 17 May | Sunday | 4th Week | St. Anne's | Discussion | Tentacular Vikings. Named for a long-forgotten legend, Tentacular Vikings is our termly collaborative story-planning event. Like tentacles grafted onto a viking, we add to an initial prompt until it becomes an outline of a setting, characters, and plot. Somebody then proposes actually writing it as a story, and invariably never does; until you arrive, and break the cycle… Previous examples include the environmentalist space-western Tentacular Yaks, the apocalypse of Milton Keynes, and the celebrated time-travelling saga Boom Sticks. A prompt will be provided before or at the event; anyone is free to come up with one. |
| 24 May | Sunday | 5th Week | St. Anne's | Discussion | Time Travel. We will meet / will have met / are meeting / have met at St. Anne's College to discuss time travel. We particularly welcome visitors from the future or past – the usual prerequisite of OUSFG Eternal Membership is waived on this occasion. Led by Ash, our (P)resident philosopher. |
| 31 May | Sunday | 6th Week | St. Anne's | Discussion | Protagonists. This week Sofia, our Treasurer, will lead a discussion on protagonists in science fiction and fantasy. What does it mean to be a protagonist, and how necessary are they? What archetypes are there, and how can these be subverted? How important are protagonist archetypes to genre conventions? What makes a protagonist genuinely compelling, and how important are good protagonists in making a narrative memorable? |
| 7 Jun | Sunday | 7th Week | St. Anne's | Discussion | Aesthetics (Ash). Why does Science Fiction look like that? And what about Fantasy? And, anyway, is any of that important? Join us for yet another philosophical discussion this term, as we untangle the mess that is beauty, style, art, and… the future! |
| 14 Jun | Sunday | 8th Week | OUSFG Library | Party | Library visit. You may have contributed to the swelling of the Library. Now, join us for an end of term party in Paulina's room, alias, the Library itself, for the last time in this location. A new librarian will be elected, coming with perks of (literally) hundreds of books. There will be books, snacks and perhaps a werewolf too. |
